Diner en blanc, which was introduced in to Vancouver four years ago, started 27 years ago by Francois Pasquier in Paris. After living abroad for a few years, Francois organized a picnic in hopes to reconnect with his old friends. He insisted that everyone bring a friend and some dinner. He also encouraged people to dress in all white so it would be easy to find one another. The first ever location of Diner en blanc was at the Bois de Boulogne in Paris. This event was previously passed on by word of mouth, but now relies heavily on social media and the Internet. The venue for the dinner is revealed last minute in a public space and guests are still requested to wear all white. Paris accommodates 15000 guests now. Guests are asked to bring a table, two white chairs and a picnic basket with dinner and silverware.
This year, Diner en Blanc Vancouver held 4500 guests at Canada Place. The date was sent months ago, and guests had the meeting spots sent to them closer to the date, and finally the location was revealed at the last minute. Thousands of guests made their way to set up of their tables and dinners at the venue. Guests pushed the envelope with additional centerpieces and adding additional white outfit accessories.
Once everyone was set, waving of the handkerchief starts the dinner. Music in the background is playing, guests enjoying great company and a great meal. At the end of the meal, once the sunset has occurred, the sparklers are lit. This is beautiful.
Then dancing begins!
